Overcompensating ⁞⁞ Series Spotlight

The Prime comedy series Overcompensating follows Benny Scanlon (Benito Skinner), a closeted high school jock looking to finally find his place as he heads off to college. In an effort to keep his queerness secret, especially in front of his overbearing sister Grace (Mary Beth Barone) and her boyfriend Peter (Adam DiMarco) who looks to take Benny under his wing on campus, Benny overcompensates by attempting to jump into sex with his new acquaintance Carmen (Wally Baram). Their awkward encounter ends with them becoming best friends and Carmen is the first person that Benny comes out to, while he harbors a crush on his British classmate Miles (Rish Shah), the subject of several of his fantasies. As Benny & Miles grow close, he's left wondering if their interactions might be building to more than friendship, all while being terrified that someone will find out he's gay.

However, it's not a mystery for fellow queer student George (Owen Thiele), who picks up on exactly what Benny's hiding and often takes the time to urge him to be himself. Benny struggles to accept his sexuality, leading to more awkward moments, but also genuine realizations about himself, especially when he returns home for school break and runs into Sammy (Lukas Gage), a high school friend who almost shared a first kiss with him, until Benny pushed him away out of fear. The two make amends and get their first kiss moment, providing Benny with more perspective as he returns to college, determined to move on from Miles after getting a clear sign that he is straight. But with drama brewing among his circle, it's not long before his secret may come out whether he wants it to or not. The out actor Skinner took on multiple roles behind the camera, as the show's creator and primary writer. The series featured several other queer performers, with guest appearances from Bowen Yang, Matt Rogers, and Caleb Hearon.
