The Wedding Banquet ⁞⁞ Movie Spotlight

A remake of the 1993 Ang Lee classic queer film, The Wedding Banquet follows Chris (Bowen Yang) and Min (Han Gi-Chan), a gay couple living as tenants of their lesbian friends and fellow couple Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) and Lee (Lily Gladstone). When Chris' grandmother Ja-Young (Youn Yuh-jung) informs him that it's time to return to Korea to join the family business when his green card expires, he is desperate to stay in America. He's surprised when Chris declines to marry him, since he knows it would cut the closeted Min off from his conservative family and their finances. With Angela & Lee looking to start a family and unable to afford their latest IVF treatment, Angela & Min concoct a plan to help them all. Min will propose to Angela to secure his green card and get his family their headlines in the Korean news, keep his closeted status with his family, and use his family's finances to pay for Lee's IVF treatment leading her to become pregnant.

But things go awry among the two couples when Ja-Young arrives unexpectedly in America looking to meet Min's fiancé. She quickly deduces the ruse after meeting Chris and Lee. Experiencing her own lament over her life being controlled by others, she agrees to keep their secrets and help the cover-up, if they go through with a traditional grand wedding to appease Min's grandfather. Things get even more complicated when the conflicted Angela & Chris end up sleeping together after a night of drinking. This leads to Angela becoming pregnant. Lee breaks up with her, while Chris breaks up with Min, not wanting to further complicate his life. Without Lee & Chris, Min & Angela go through with the wedding, after Ja-Young gives Min a heartfelt blessing, praising him for finding happiness with his found family. Chris gets the pep talk he needs and crashes the wedding, finally proposing to Min, with his grandmother's support. Angela reconciles with Lee and it's later revealed that the four have been joined in their home by two babies, expanding their found family.
