Companion ⁞⁞ Movie Spotlight

The sci-fi thriller Companion is a dark comedy that centers on Iris (Sophie Thatcher), a young woman who joins her boyfriend Josh (Jack Quaid) for a weekend getaway with his friends, only to discover that she is Josh's robot companion, programmed to please his every desire. After Josh hacks into her systems on his phone, he increases her aggression settings allowing her to be capable of murder. An unfortunate encounter with their host Sergey lead to his death, shocking Josh's gay friend Eli (Harvey Guillén) and Eli's boyfriend Patrick (Lukas Gage). Iris herself is shocked by the revelation of her true existence and finds herself in a fight for her life as it's revealed that Josh orchestrated her actions against Sergey as part of a plot with his friend Kat (Megan Suri) to get rid of her lover and steal the millions of dollars he has stored in the house. When Iris escapes, Josh reveals his hacking to Eli, bringing him into his scheme with the promise of a portion of the fortune. Annoyed at being left out of his friends' plotting, he urges them to split the money four ways, to include Patrick as well. But Josh refuses, admitting that Patrick doesn't count. This leads to the revelation that Patrick is also a companion robot. Eli ultimately agrees to help track down Iris, bringing Patrick, and a gun, along as well. The four co-conspirators head out into the wooded area outside the house. Eli & Patrick unknowingly come across the hiding Iris, who overhears them discussing Josh's big scheme as Eli vents to Patrick about being left out. He tells Patrick that he would never treat his friends that way, if the roles were reversed. Then, Patrick reveals to Eli that he knows he's a robot. This shocks Eli, who wonders how Patrick could know. He explains to Eli that he had been putting the pieces together for a while. This doesn't appear to change anything for their relationship, as each professes their love for the other.

When they are interrupted by the sound of Josh's phone that Iris has in her possession, they spring into action to chase her down as she attempts to run away. The duo gets separated long enough for Eli to tackle Iris down a hill. The two fight over the gun, which goes off, killing Eli. Patrick is left stunned when he comes upon the scene. Iris uses his distraction to escape. The panicked Josh looks to use Patrick to get Iris back, but the companion robot is unresponsive while cradling Eli's body. Josh hacks Patrick's system to increase his aggression and then reboots him so that he will pair with Josh, whom he now sees as his love. He obediently hunts down Iris, returning her to the house, killing a police officer along the way. Patrick watches as Josh tortures Iris and ultimately forces her to shoot herself. The companion robot company dispatches two technicians to retrieve her body, as Patrick masquerades as the police officer. When the technicians leave and comment that they suspect Josh bypassed the companion's programming, Josh sends Patrick to kill them as well. One of the two, Teddy (Jaboukie Young-White) manages to escape into the woods. Patrick tracks him down until Iris wakes up. She finds them and saves Teddy as Patrick turns his focus to her. Iris manages to help Patrick break free of Josh's control by helping Patrick remember his true love for Eli. Patrick then willingly shuts himself off for good in the wake of learning his love is gone. Iris is left to confront Josh, with Teddy's help to give her complete control over her programming. The small cast featured three out actors in Gage, Guillén & Young-White.
