Heated Rivalry ⁞⁞ Series Spotlight

Based on the book from the best-selling Game Changers series by author Rachel Reid, the Canadian drama Heated Rivalry tells the story of two young rookie hockey players that strike up a secret sexual relationship, while developing a perceived rivalry on the ice due to media coverage surrounding their simultaneous rise in the sport. The Japanese-Canadian Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) feels the pressure from his family to be a role model for minorities in hockey and rack up brand deals. Meanwhile, the Russian-born Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) carries the weight of his secret bisexuality while representing his home country, and dealing with a stern father and greedy older brother. With Shane on the Montreal Metros and Ilya on the Boston Raiders, the two find themselves facing off on the ice multiple times over the course of several years, allowing them to continue their sexual encounters. But eventually, both men start to question the nature of their relationship, with each experiencing growing feelings for the other.

Conflicts and challenges rise between Shane & Ilya after becoming captains of their respective teams. Unbeknownst to both of them, another queer connection has developed between Shane's former teammate Scott Hunter (François Arnaud), now the captain of the New York Admirals, and Kip Gordon (Robbie G.K.), a smoothie shop employee working towards graduate school. The superstitious Shane breaks a scoring slump after drinking Kip's smoothie, leading him to return to the shop repeatedly. This leads to a flirtation that blossoms into a secret romance, with the two moving in together. But, Scott's insistence on keeping their romance a secret weighs on the openly gay Kip. After Shane is injured during a game against Ilya's team, it paves the way for an MLH Cup victory for Scott who invites Kip onto the ice during the celebration for a public kiss, which shocks the watching Shane & Ilya.

In the wake of Scott's very public coming out, Shane & Ilya spend more time together alone. Ilya shares his family trauma with Shane, and both confess their love for one another. While contemplating next steps that could help Ilya avoid returning to Russia, they grow even closer at Shane's family cottage until his father makes an unannounced visit, seeing the two men kissing. Knowing their secret is out, Ilya accompanies Shane to see his parents, where he comes out to them and reveals the details of his years-long relationship with Ilya. Shane's parents prove supportive of his coming out and even his controlling mother apologizes for her long-standing hatred towards his hockey "rival." The first season ends with Shane & Ilya driving back to the cottage together after making their relationship official.
