Lover Merman ⁞⁞ BL Spotlight
Based on the web novel "Phiang Nawa Lover Merman," the Thai fantasy romance Lover Merman centers on the connection that develops between mild-mannered Nawa (Akkharaphat Sutiteannarong) and newcomer Phurit (Feros Khan Chamchoi). Nawa works as a bartender at a seaside bar that welcomes Phurit who arrives to help his close friend Phana manage the business. The charming Phurit takes an immediate interest in Nawa, leading to conflict as Nawa is in an established relationship with Phraphai (Jirayu Aungvanich). Nawa & Phraphai also happen to transform into mermen. The orphaned Nawa conceals his identity, along with Phraphai. As Nawa & Phurit's attraction goes stronger, so does Phraphai's sense of possession over Nawa, whom he claims to be protecting from the specter of human merman hunters.
Using themes of danger, misunderstanding, and mistreatment, the series draws parallels between the lives of the mermen and homophobia. The story itself, is full of simmering sexual tension. In addition to the romantic triangle between Phurit, Nawa & Phraphai, Phana (Chalach Tantijibul) finds himself developing feelings for the younger Ping (Jiramate Srinonghang) who is struggling with acceptance within his family, while also hiding his own merman secret. Then there's Phurit's brother Phuthan (Buranrat Hombutre) who follows him to the island, bringing along his friend Winyu (Kannatorn Charapinyo), with whom he shares his own sexual tension. On top of that, Phurit befriends a cafe owner, Silp, who is harboring his own secret past involving a merman affair from 20 years earlier. As Phurit uncovers more about Nawa's true nature after drunkenly seeing him on the beach in his merman form, he looks to Silp to fill in the blanks about merman discrimination.
With Nawa & Phurit's romance blossoming, Phraphai learns of it and soon goes off the deep end, feeling his well-crafted world beginning to crumble. As he feels Nawa slipping away, he holds even tighter, leading to danger for Nawa. Phurit steps in to be the hero, only for Phraphai to attack him underwater, revealing himself as he leaves Phurit for dead. Nawa rescues his new love, but fears it may be too late as Phurit has been poisoned by Phraphai's actions. Phraphai reveals harsh secrets to Nawa, including the knowledge of his parents' true killer before ending his life in front of Nawa as a final act of torture. Merman blood saves Phurit, allowing him and Nawa to get their happy ending.
