Kiss of the Spider Woman ⁞⁞ Movie Spotlight

Kiss of the Spider Woman
is the 2025 musical drama based on the 1976 Manuel Puig novel and the 1992 stage musical. Taking place in 1983 in Argentina nearing the end of the historic Dirty War, Luis Molina (Tonatiuh), a trans woman is incarcerated for public indecency stemming from homosexual acts. Luis shares a cell with Valentín Arregui (Diego Luna), a member of a dissident political revolution. The two clash immediately, as Arregui is annoyed by Molina's flamboyant personality and obsession with movies. Molina adorns his wall with posters of his favorites, including Kiss of the Spider Woman, starring his idol Ingrid Luna (Jennifer Lopez). Things get complicated for the well-meaning Molina who longs for freedom to get back to his ailing mother. When the warden presents her with an opportunity that could lead to parole, Molina is charged with getting information on the revolution from Arregui to share with the authorities. This leaves Molina extremely conflicted, especially when she witnesses the physical results of the guards' torture of Arregui and his imprisoned allies, whom he refuses to turn on.

Molina nurses Arregui's wounds while sharing the plot of his favorite musical, which plays out in his imagination, with the two men appearing in the roles of Kendall and Armando, the men closest to leading lady Aurora (Lopez), whose attentions are torn between her assistant and best friend Kendall (Tonatiuh) and her new romantic interest Armando (Luna). With the legendary Spider Woman (Lopez) requiring a male sacrifice to continue to protect the fictional village from malevolent spirits, she sets her sights on Armando, just after Kendall sells him out to gangsters out of jealousy. In the real world, Molina & Arregui grow closer through Molina's bouts of storytelling and care for Arregui's injuries. Despite not giving the authorities what they need to further destroy Arregui and the dissidents, Molina manages to secure her release. But before leaving, the cellmates open themselves up to their growing affection, leading to the physical consummation of their newfound love.

This makes Molina's departure more difficult, but she leaves prison behind, reuniting with her mother, after finishing the retelling of Kiss of the Spider Woman to Arregui, which ends with Kendall sacrificing himself in place of Armando out of love for his best friend. Molina leaves the prison, hoping to help Arregui's cause by passing along information to his allies on the outside. This, however, leads to a public trap that places Molina between the police and the revolutionaries. When Molina falls behind in their attempt to flee the police, the dissidents shoot him in order to prevent him from giving information about them to the authorities. As Molina dies on the street, she imagines herself fully realized on stage, sharing a final dance with Arregui. After being embraced by the Spider Woman, Molina reveals that she did not give her life for the cause, but out of love for Arregui. In prison, Arregui is devastated by the news of Molina's death, just before the fall of the military regime, leading to the prisoners being freed.
