Sweet Magnolias - Season 5 ⁞⁞ Series Spotlight

Netflix recently released the fifth season of the romantic drama Sweet Magnolias. The series follows a trio of childhood friends, Maddie, Helen & Dana Sue, affectionately known as the Sweet Magnolias, as they support each other and their extended family and friends through the challenges of life in their small South Carolina town of Serenity. The main cast of characters includes Isaac Downey (Chris Medlin), a rising cooking talent working under his mentor, head chef Erik (Dion Johnstone), at Sullivan & Friends, the restaurant owned by Dana Sue. Season 5 saw focus placed on Isaac's love life with his boyfriend Michael, after the two crossed paths for the first time since college during Season 4 and began dating. The new season began with Isaac seeing Michael (Kyle Findley) off, as his emergency management job saw him continuing his travels, away from Serenity. He promised that he'd be back to see Isaac for their anniversary, catching Isaac off-guard as he later admitted he hadn't been counting their time together. He sought advice from his best friend Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears), the mother of his young half-sister, who assured him that he wasn't already a bad boyfriend in his first long-term relationship.

It wasn't long before the town rallied together around a resident's turmoil, as Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) and her family were displaced by a fire in their house. Given his boss's trauma, Isaac put off his attempts to plan the perfect anniversary so that he could support Dana Sue and her circle. He was surprised by the arrival of Michael, who revealed that he came earlier to support Isaac, knowing he was going to be fully busy supporting everyone else. While Isaac was happy that Michael was there, he panicked over his secret anniversary plans until Noreen stepped in to help him plan the perfect date. Isaac leveraged the restaurant staff to put together a perfect night, which ended with both Isaac & Michael professing their love and sharing a dance. Michael extended his stay in Serenity, putting his skills to use to help Dana Sue with her insurance claim woes, while Isaac was tapped by Erik & Helen (Heather Headley) to cater their upcoming wedding. Isaac was shocked by their confidence in him and agreed to give up his spot as a groomsman to handle catering. They then revealed that they hoped he could do both. Isaac threw himself into his work and wedding planning, thinking he was again neglecting Michael, who assured him that he was fine hanging around the restaurant while Isaac did what made him happy.

Isaac soon turned his thoughts to what would happen when Michael left town again, which he didn't want. Knowing Michael's job required him to travel a lot, Isaac wondered if he might consider moving to Serenity. Noreen counseled him to live in the moment and enjoy the time he was building every day with Michael. The wedding saw Isaac acting as groomsman, with Michael among the attendees. After Helen & Erik were wed, Isaac ensured that the reception catering was perfect and unveiled his recreation of Erik's famous brownie recipe as the wedding "cake." Isaac & Noreen found themselves both catching the bouquet at the same time. Noreen gave the bouquet up to Isaac, on the condition that he do the right thing in his relationship. Isaac presented the bouquet to Michael, proposing that he move to Serenity so they could be together. Michael revealed that he had already talked to his boss about making Serenity his home base, telling Isaac that he chooses him. The two ended the season with a kiss and a dance among the wedding guests.
