Based on true events, the MAX original thriller Tokyo Vice follows Jake Adelstein, an American journalist working for a publication in Tokyo, who finds himself on the wrong side in a war involving the city's most powerful crime bosses. Jake is helped along the way by several friends and colleagues he meets in the city, including Jun "Trendy" Shinohara (played by Takaki Uda), a fellow journalist. Episode 3 of the second season found Trendy attending a social function at the U.S. Embassy, along with his colleagues. While partaking in some of the food, Trendy met Jason Aoki (played by Aoi Takeya), a Japanese-American man working for the Embassy. The friendly Jason asked about Trendy's job and seemed disappointed when he revealed he was a journalist. Jason claimed to have lost a bet, having guessed with a co-worker that Trendy was a model. Trendy picked up on Jason's flirtation and Episode 4 saw the two meeting for drinks. They discussed Jason's work at the Embassy and he joked about his lack of power in his job being unimpressive. Trendy made it clear that he was still interested. Jason suggested Trendy take him somewhere more fun and the two ended up at a gay bar. When another patron approached them, Jason introduced himself and asked about the man's job after the man quipped about Trendy being a baseball player. The man made a quick exit when he realized Jason was asking about his true identity. Trendy then explained to Jason that the men who frequent that place don't want to share personal information. Jason then talked about being open with his sexuality in America and not wanting to go back into the closet. This seemed to strike a chord with Trendy, revealing his own closeted status.
