Will Trent (Ep. 2x6) ⁞⁞ Episode Spotlight

Episode 6 of the second season of the ABC crime drama Will Trent, titled "We Are Family," found Ramón Rodriguez's titular character and his team descending upon a gay bar in order to solve a murder mystery after a judge is found dead with a stamp on her hand from the bar. Inside, they crossed paths with Glinda Velvet (Kenneth Mosley) who immediately passed over evidence of recent harassment that the performing Drag Queens had suffered. Will & his partner Angie (Erika Christensen) revealed that they weren't there due to harassment complaints. They revealed the murder of Judge Ringgold, leading Glinda to explain that the judge was the mother of one of the young queens, Gabe (Garrett Richmond). They broke the news to Gabe and looked to question him until Glinda stepped in, urging them to wait until Gabe dealt with his grief. The next day, Will & Angie were surprised when Glinda arrived, revealing he was also a lawyer named Josiah who was representing Gabe, who explained how his mother had come to apologize to him for past abuse and abandonment suffered when she married his religious stepfather. Gabe explained how a fight between them led to him being kicked out, forced to leave his sister Rowan (Gillian Rabin) behind. Gabe explained how he had turned to drugs on the streets, until Glinda and other drag queens saved him, becoming his true family.

Later, Will & Angie's colleagues Faith (Iantha Richardson) & Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin) returned to the club where they found a protesting vandal outside, harassing Josiah and another queen, Bon Bon (Jonny Beauchamp) who had helped the police borrow all of the queens' wigs to try to match a hair sample found at the crime scene. The protestor Barrett (Leif Gantvoort) got into another confrontation, causing himself to be arrested, after the cops also found outside security footage showing him in an altercation with the judge making him a suspect. The investigation would come to a shocking halt when Gabe confessed to the murder and was found with the wig and gun. Josiah urged him to tell the truth, knowing he was innocent. Angie and the team agreed, especially after Gabe was unable to answer questions the killer would know. He broke down and confessed that he hadn't killed his mother, but he believed his sister did after hearing the details of the crime. He revealed he was trying to protect her, as he felt guilty for leaving her in their abusive home. Believing she might go to the club to find him, they all raced there where Will met them, just as Glinda & Bon Bon hit the stage for a performance. Will, Angie & Gabe found Rowan in a dressing room with a gun, prepared to kill herself. Gabe poured his heart out to his sister, apologizing for not coming back for her. The distraction allowed Will to unarm the young woman. Gabe embraced her before she was taken into custody. Meanwhile, Barrett returned, looking for revenge on Glinda for posting his personal details in relation to the harassment, which led to him being fired from his job. Faith & Ormewood worked to rescue her, ultimately receiving a helping hand from Bon Bon. The episode was directed by veteran actress Lea Thompson.
