Feeling Randy ⁞⁞ Movie Spotlight
The teen comedy Feeling Randy tells the coming of age story of the title character, living in 1970s California. Like his peers, Randy (Reid Miller) is a teenager grappling with his blossoming sexuality while dealing with the usual teen angst related to his quirky family and high school obligations. However, Randy also finds himself realizing that his sexual interest may not be in other girls. This doesn't stop him from attempting to lose his virginity alongside his friend group, which includes the slightly more experienced Sampson (Tyler Lawrence Gray), his best friend Mark (Oliver Hibbs Wyman), and the super-smart slacker Adam (Shane Almagor). Sampson spearheads the guys' effort to take a roadtrip to a brothel, after he first visited the place with his older brother Luke (Blaine Kern III). With Randy secretly questioning his sexuality, he attempts to figure things out by getting close to his classmate Melissa (Kerrice Brooks), though their attempt at kissing leaves her sensing that he may not be so straight, causing Randy to want to prove her wrong. Things get even more complicated for Randy when the stoner Luke plants a kiss on him after the guys come looking to borrow his car for their road trip. With the help of a woman at the brothel, Randy indeed loses his virginity, becoming aroused by thoughts of his male friends. However, this doesn't give him the clarity he wants. After a shower, Randy attempts to escape his "baby face" by drawing on a mustache. But, when he sees his sister's lipstick, he is compelled to try that as well, just before his father (Jonathan Silverman) walks in, leading to a tense confrontation about whether Randy may be gay. Randy flees his home and ends up at Sampson's house, where Luke is the only one present. Luke appears able to see the real Randy, as he tries to convince him to relax and embrace all of his feelings. He invites Randy to get high with him before moving things to the hot tub, where both are soon naked. Randy gets his first sexual experience with another guy, leaving him changed for good. Randy returns home to find his apologetic father, who is urged by his mother to apologize. Randy ends the film happily looking forward to the day he can leave his home behind and truly gain his independence to be his true self.
