A Nice Indian Boy ⁞⁞ Movie Spotlight
The romantic comedy A Nice Indian Boy tells the story of Naveen Gavaskar (Karan Soni), a gay doctor actively avoiding his liberal Indian family, until he crosses paths with Jay Kurundkar (Jonathan Groff), a freelance photographer who reveals he was adopted by an Indian family after years in the foster care system. Sparks fly between the two, leading to romance. But when the two get engaged, Naveen knows he will have to introduce Jay to his parents and sister Arundhathi (Sunita Mani). He attempts to prepare Jay for meeting his parents by asking him to treat the meeting like an interview, despite his parents being very liberal. Meanwhile, his mother Megha (Zarna Garg) and his father Archit (Harish Patel) are uncomfortable and unsure of how to act given that Naveen rarely comes home and has never brought home a boy. The Gavaskars share their shock that Jay is white, leading him to explain his adoption and his parents' deaths. Arundhathi is openly hostile towards Jay, who soon realizes that Naveen is lying to his family about the details of their relationship and their engagement.
This drives a wedge between the boyfriends and Jay decides to move out, citing Naveen's apparent internalized homophobia, as he refuses to embrace their love openly. While Naveen disputes that, it becomes clear that his strained relationship with his family is due to his feeling that his father secretly does not accept him. With help from his sister and his gay hospital co-worker Paul (Peter S. Kim), Naveen manages to make amends with Jay through his love of Bollywood films. But when they go back to his parents, announcing their re-engagement, they are less than enthusiastic. In an effort to support his son, Archit pays a visit to Jay's art exhibit, which includes a family portrait of him with his parents. This leads him to connect with Jay and give his blessing. In the end, Naveen & Jay get married, with their friends and Naveen's family by their side. The film was directed by Roshan Sethi, the real-life partner of lead actor Karan Soni.
