Brilliant Minds (2x7) ⁞⁞ Episode Spotlight
Episode 7 of the second season of the medical drama Brilliant Minds found leading man Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) confronting his romantic past as well as his romantic future. The episode began with visiting British college professor Tom Price (Jamie Thomas King) giving a lecture when he suffered a seizure, triggered by music. This led him to seek out Wolf's medical expertise. Given his facial blindness, Wolf didn't immediately recognize Tom but as they talked he was flooded with memories of the fateful summer of first love he experienced with the older exchange student when they were teens. Wolf quickly dedicated himself to figuring out what brain anomaly might be afflicting Tom and causing his seizures triggered by music inside his head. Meanwhile, Wolf began spending more time with the hospital's acting chief, and his ex-boyfriend, Dr. Josh Nichols (Teddy Sears), as they were slowly moving past the rift that broke them apart. Nosy lead nurse Scotty Silva (Al Calderon) was unable to keep quiet after seeing the two doctors sharing some banter. After previously volunteering to be Wolf's love guru, he urged Wolf to try to rekindle the romance, despite Wolf explaining to him how he ruined their relationship. Tom's case served to bring the two doctors together as Wolf consulted with Nichols for his neurological expertise.
However, any potential jealousy on Nichols' part was tempered when the two doctors were surprised by the arrival of Tom's husband Rashid (Nadeem Umar-Khitab) and his children after Tom suffered another dangerous seizure. With Wolf & Nichols laying out a potential surgical plan to help relieve Tom's symptoms, the professor found himself second-guessing his future, leading to a heart-to-heart with Wolf. Taking a page out of their past together, they took a walk on the beach where Wolf explained to him what his life had been like since their teen fling, including the drama revolving around his father's mental illness, which had led him to abandon Wolf yet again recently. Wolf urged Tom to keep moving forward and not give up. After the surgery, Tom shared his happiness with Wolf for helping him so that he could embrace the life he has and loves so much. Feeling inspired, Wolf went to Nichols, looking to make amends and try their romance again. Nichols, however, revealed that he had started dating someone else. Wolf was surprised to hear it was a man from Nichols' past that he reconnected with recently. When he mentioned that it was something that felt easy, Wolf was visibly hurt, believing his own mental struggles were too complicated for Nichols. He quickly departed, as Nichols realized how his words might have been interpreted. Ted Sutherland & Andrew Horton appeared in the episode for brief flashbacks as young Oliver and young Tom, respectively.
