St. Denis Medical (2x5) ⁞⁞ Episode Spotlight

Episode 5 of the second season of the NBC medical comedy St. Denis Medical featured a gay subplot as Nurse Matt (Mekki Leeper) set out to discover the cause of the mystery illness afflicting emergency room patient Kyle (Jonah Beckett). Kyle explained that he passed out while watching his roommate Jeff playing sports. With his tests showing no red flags, Dr. Ron (David Alan Grier) was ready to discharge him after urging him to stay hydrated. Kyle then suffered another fainting spell after Matt mentioned his roommate was waiting to take him home. After further tests, Dr. Ron revealed that Kyle had a unique form of narcolepsy, where experiencing an intense emotion was causing his muscles to shut down, leading him to collapse. Kyle worried about how to stop ever experiencing emotion, but Dr. Ron let him know that there was likely a specific trigger which a specialist could help him pinpoint. When Kyle expressed regret that a specialist wouldn't be able to see him for over a month, Matt stepped in to try to help. He attempted to trigger shifts in Kyle's mood, hoping one of them would cause another fainting spell and provide the answer. His fellow nurse, the outgoing Serena (Kahyun Kim), privately criticized his methods but soon found herself joining in, as they worked their way through several scenarios in interacting with Kyle. When none of his mood shifts triggered another collapse, they were left feeling defeated. However, when Kyle spotted his roommate Jeff (Jeremiah Brown), he was surprised that Jeff was still there. Jeff replied that he didn't want to just leave Kyle. This interaction caused Kyle to faint, falling into Matt's arms. Matt & Serena then deduced that Kyle is gay and was triggered by Jeff. Kyle revealed to them that he's known he was gay since he was ten. He confided in them that he didn't want to have feelings for Jeff because they were friends and roommates and he didn't want to make things weird. Serena urged him to not keep his feelings bottled up, because it wouldn't be good for him. Kyle agreed to think about telling Jeff.
