Adults (2x0) ⁞⁞ Episode Spotlight

The FX/Hulu comedy series Adults returns for its second season beginning August 27. To prepare viewers for the impending chaos, the series released a prequel episode ahead of the new season, chronicling a fateful meeting for the group. Season 1 ended with the show's gay character Anton (Owen Thiele) in a green card marriage with his housemate, the sexually fluid Paul Baker (Jack Innanen), to keep him from being deported back to Canada after Paul Baker's girlfriend, and Anton's bestie, Issa backed out of getting married at the last minute. The prequel episode took place before Paul Baker's arrival, with Anton & Issa hanging out aimlessly with their fellow housemates Samir & Billie when they noticed news footage on television showing the New York City marathon. The quartet was shocked to see supporters with signs for Anton, who revealed to his housemates that his tendency toward lying had led him to spin a tale to his co-workers about running in the marathon. 

Fearing things could blow up with his job, the roommates pulled together to execute a scam to convince Anton's co-workers that he was indeed participating in the New York marathon. They sprung into action, getting Anton ready to slip into the race just a block behind where his co-workers were waiting to cheer him on. After making a scene with them, Anton made a quick exit from the marathon and the quartet returned home in celebration. However, when Anton's co-workers showed up at the house, telling the roommates that they couldn't track Anton to the finish line, he was forced into a quick change to flee the house before they could see him. This caused Anton to cross paths with a sleeping Paul Baker, who had also participated in the marathon before passing out in front of Issa who secretly brought him home. Anton & Paul Baker shared a quirky introduction as Anton attempted to steel his insulated wrap to help his ruse, causing Paul Baker to get a leg cramp, which Anton helped him with. 

Paul Baker was surprised to hear of Anton's antics with the race and his co-workers, but found himself a bit jealous to hear about how Anton's roommates had come to his rescue, despite it all now potentially unraveling. After finding some foil paper, Anton climbed out a window and returned to the house, pretending that he had just come from finishing the marathon. When his co-workers asked to see his medal from the race, the roommates didn't have an answer, until an eavesdropping Paul Baker swooped in, giving Anton his medal, claiming Anton let him borrow it. With his secret saved, Anton celebrated with his co-workers after sharing a silent thanks with his future husband, whose actions endeared him to the group upon their first meeting.
