10 Out Actors that Played Multiple Roles on American Horror Story
The long running anthology series American Horror Story is back. With Season 13 in full swing, viewers have been treated to a haunting trip down memory lane, as several iconic characters have returned. Given the series' multiverse of roles played by the cast across seasons, it's no surprise that some didn't make the cut, including those played by queer actors. Out actors Joey Pollari and John Waters make their debuts this season but are franchise newcomers. This week's listicle puts the spotlight on 10 out actors that played multiple characters on American Horror Story but aren't slated to appear on Season 13. Leave a comment if we missed any of your favorites. Warning: Spoilers Ahead!
Dominic Burgess
(Apocalypse, Delicate)
Out actor Dominic Burgess appeared in just five episodes of American Horror Story, across two different seasons. For his one-time apperance in Season 8, Burgess played Phil Devlin, a new member of the Church of Satan, looking to make his first sacrifice. Burgess would reappear five years later, in Season 12, playing Hamish Moss, a struggling film director who gets involved with Siobhan Corbyn (Kim Kardashian) to advance his career, ultimately leading to his demise after four episodes.
Chaz Bono
(Roanoke, Cult)
Chaz Bono got down and dirty for his two AHS roles, which both came in Season 6 of the franchise, where Bono was cast in the recurring role of Lot Polk, a member of a fictitious Roanoke colony in three episodes. Like most of the cast, he also played Lot's actor Brian Wells in two additional episodes. Bono would return for a recurring role during Season 7, where he played Gary, a store worker that would become a noted member of the series' Cult, seduced to their dark side thanks to his political leanings.
Billy Eichner
(Cult, Apocalypse)
Though Billy Eichner is more known for comedy, he would dip his toe into horror for American Horror Story. Despite appearing in just two seasons, Eichner would play three roles, beginning in Season 7 where he starred as Harrison Wilton, a closeted husband who begins cheating on his wife, ultimately leading to him joining the series' Cult. For Season 8 the next year, Eichner appeared in two recurring roles, playing both Mutt Nutter and Brock, a dangerous victim of the Apocalypse who comes looking for revenge.
Matt Bomer
(Freak Show, Hotel)
A one-episode guest appearance during Season 4's Freak Show would bring Matt Bomer into the AHS universe. After playing Andy Stiles, a target of the deranged Dandy Mott (Finn Wittrock), Bomer would return for Season 5 the following year, starring alongside Wittrock in Hotel. Bomer would take on the major role of Donovan, who would get drawn into the dark supernatural shenanigans of the Hotel Cortez, while romancing leading lady The Countess (Lady Gaga) over the course of nine episodes.
Isaac Powell
(Double Feature, NYC)
Out actor Isaac Powell has been a recent addition to the AHS franchise, with his first appearance coming during Season 10 in 2021. Powell appeared in the second half of Double Feature, playing Troy Lord, a young man who finds himself impregnated by aliens, along with his boyfriend Cal (Nico Greetham). Powell returned for Season 11, starring as Theo Graves, a photographer who gets wrapped up in the NYC serial killing investigation through his romance with aspiring journalist Adam (Charlie Carver).
Leslie Jordan
(Coven, Roanoke, 1984)
While more known for his comedic work, the late Leslie Jordan was no stranger to horror, having appeared in Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. He would play four roles in three seasons of AHS. He appeared as Quentin Fleming for three episodes of Season 3. Season 6 featured Jordan appearing in three more episodes, playing Cricket Marlowe and later Ashley Gilbert. Jordan would return for Season 9, where he appeared in four episodes as Courtney during the second half of the 1984 season.
Zachary Quinto
(Murder House, Asylum, NYC, Delicate)
Zachary Quinto began his AHS journey in Season 1 with a recurring role as Chad Warwick, a man revealed to be a previous tenant of the dangerous Murder House with his love Patrick (Teddy Sears). He followed that up with a starring role in Season 2 as Asylum's dark doc Oliver Thredson. Another starring role would bring Quinto back to the franchise nine years later, playing problematic antagonist Sam Jones in Season 11. Quinto would return to the franchise briefly in Season 12, appearing in an uncredited cameo.
Cody Fern
(Apocalypse, 1984, Double Feature)
Cody Fern made an immediate splash on AHS, with his debut in Season 8 as Michael Langdon, who would be revealed to be the son of Satan. For Season 9, Fern would return for the camp horror of 1984, where his character Xavier Plympton was among those stalked by two killers. For the third season in a row, Fern would return to the franchise during Season 10 in a smaller role, playing Valiant Thor, a visitor to Washington D.C. that would reveal himself to be an android, set on influencing the course of humanity in two episodes.
Cheyenne Jackson
(Hotel, Roanoke, Cult, Apocalypse)
Cheyenne Jackson has been on the starring cast of four consecutive seasons of AHS, though he's played only supporting roles, appearing in just 28 episodes during that time. For Season 5, Jackson played Will Drake. Jackson returned in Season 6, starring as Sidney James. He would take on the role of suspicious therapist Rudy Vincent in Season 7, before returning for Season 8 in the role of John Henry Moore, a member of a warlock coven that is quickly usurped by the returning witches from Season 3's Coven.
Denis O'Hare
(Murder House, Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, Roanoke, Double Feature, NYC, Delicate)
Denis O'Hare is a true veteran of AHS, having appeared in eight different seasons of the series, in everything from starring roles to guest spots. O'Hare starred in the very first season as disfigured voyeur Larry Harvey. He would return in Season 3 as Coven servant Spalding. He remained on the cast for Season 4 in his role as Stanley and Season 5 as the scene-stealing trans character Liz Taylor. While he only guest starred on Season 10, he would have a starring role on Seasons 6, 11 and 12, bringing his total character count to nine.
