Chicago Fire (13x3) ⁞⁞ Episode Spotlight
Episode 3 of the thirteenth season of the NBC drama Chicago Fire put some focus on gay firefighter Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyri). He joined his unit in responding to a building fire early in the episode. Ritter was among the first responders, heading into the burning building along with his mentor and supervisor Herrmann (David Eigenberg). The two tracked down a man whom Ritter had earlier spotted outside calling for help from a window. He wasn't sure if there was anyone else on the floor, so Ritter volunteered to clear the remaining rooms while Herrmann got the man out to safety. With the fire spreading, an explosion occurred, sending Ritter crashing through a window and onto a flower bed on the ground outside. His best friend, paramedic Violet (Hanako Greensmith) sprung into action coming to his side, along with others from the firefighter team. She performed fast triage along with her partner Novak (Jocelyn Hudon), as the firemen helped get Ritter out of his gear at the scene, while a worried Herrmann watched. Ritter was loaded into the ambulance, with Herrmann jumping in to go with him to the hospital. Later, Violet & Novak paid Darren a visit in his hospital room after responding to another call. He assured them that he was doing fine, as he was going to be discharged soon. All of his tests came back normal. His cop boyfriend Dwayne (Samuel B. Jackson) was on the phone, continuing his police investigation into the building fire. Violet & Novak insisted on weighing in on his potential discharge, as they tried to examine him, which Darren rejected. Herrmann joined them, joking that he was glad Ritter didn't fall into a coma. Darren assured him as well that he was going to be fine. He even said he'd be back by his next shift.
Darren indeed returned to the firehouse for his next shift, leading to celebration from the crew, who jokingly presented him with a piece of the bush that he landed on at the scene. Violet joined the party, warning him not to do his own stunts anymore, to which Darren agreed. Darren then revealed to them that Dwayne told him there had been a break in the case of the fire. The investigation led back to the family that owns the restaurant beneath the apartments. Dwayne was present as the couple and their daughter were questioned about the conflicting evidence which seemed to show that arson was the cause, not faulty equipment in the restaurant. This led to a confession that revealed the couple's daughter was the culprit, not wanting to inherit her family's business so that she could live her own independent life. Dwayne proceeded to arrest her, as Darren watched in the hallway. Darren was joined by Herrmann, as Dwayne took the woman away. Herrmann revealed to Darren that Dwayne beat the ambulance to the hospital after he learned about Darren being injured. He assured Darren that he had a good guy. Darren agreed. As he walked away, Herrmann urged him not to screw things up with Dwayne. Darren smiled, telling him that he was trying not to.
